At least I managed a run in the woods before the snow started. Of course the silver lining to the cloud is a quiet afternoon at home and time to get this show on the road.

Thoughts of writing this blog have pushed me into a creative spurt over the last few weeks. Since the New Year I have made the wilderness quilt (start to finish, a total stashbuster – I didn’t buy anything new for this one) which is also my first machine quilted quilt. Machine quilting was such an eye-opener. Something I’ve wanted to try my hand at for years, but which always seemed way too scary. I couldn’t imagine that my machine would co-operate at all, but after a successful trial project (stipple-quilted hot water bottle cover) I gave it a go – and wouldn’t you know, the whole quilt was quilted in an afternoon. I can’t believe it was so easy!!! OK, it is only stippled, but none the less I now see that a whole new world has opened up for me. (And New Year’s resolution number two can be ticked off the list). I have stab-stitch handquilted all my quilts up until now and although I love the effect of handquilting, I really do end up spending many months, if not years on each quilt. I’m sure I will continue to make quilts this way sometimes, now I feel like I can really stand a realistic chance of a) using up my stash in my lifetime and b) making more of the wonderful quilts that are currently only in my head.

When there isn’t a blizzard outside and there is some decent natural light I’ll make a photo of the quilt…

I have also just finished some socks for my eldest daughter – using this pattern:

And Berocco Comfort Sock wool – very nice to knit and the word on the street says wonderfully soft to wear. The socks have a very nice, easy to knit slightly reinforced heel and the toes were finished off with Kitchener stitch, which I know lots of people don’t like, but I LOVE it – it gives such a neat finish. I must remember for the next time to photograph beautiful socks away from very patterned carpets though. The carpet rather spoils the effect!

These socks were my entry for the Knitting Olympics and I must have been watching way too much TV as they were done in record quick time.
