Left to my own devices I guess I’d rather quilt or knit than dressmake – and that certainly isn’t going to get all this fabric used up. So with that in mind I’ve signed up for my local sewing class again – so I HAVE to get busting on that stash!

This is a class that I’ve been attending for over 15 years, with short breaks now and then. I’m not wild about going out in the evenings in the winter when it’s cold and dark and icy, so yesterday was my first evening back for a few months. It was great to see everybody – it’s always the same group – ranging in age from 14 to 82 – and for the most part we’ve known each other for years. It was great to go back to hugs and a really warm welcome back feeling. We’re all fairly competent seamstresses – and it’s always helpful to have everybody’s input on skirt lengths and shapes, what works and what doesn’t. We know each other well enough to be honest without upsetting anyone – and I really do trust what the sewing ladies say!

I’m making a spring skirt in pale aqua baby cord – one of my favourite fabrics and probably my very favourite colour for spring. It’s the same pattern that I made the black and beige linen skirt in last year – 6 gores. Really I should be making something challenging – our teacher Lucie is a haut couture seamstress and we really can make ANYTHING with her. But right now I want to make something quick, that I know I’ll wear and enjoy and most of all I want to make a nice space in my fabric cupboard!

And, before any one asks, I shall be going short (but not too short) rather than long. As I learned the last time, I’m too small and too young to wear long skirts (wow, hearing that felt nice!) and I look good in something with a bit of pfiff! And you know, they really were right, the sewing ladies – so I’m listening and going with the advice!

And merrily busting a little corner of my stash as I do it!

Helen

I’m not sure whether I’ve ever admitted to the fact that in addition to a quilting fabric stash and a yarn stash I’m also sitting on a dressmaking fabric stash that should see me well-clad way into my 90s!
