{"id":2434,"date":"2011-08-09T16:34:19","date_gmt":"2011-08-09T16:34:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.com\/?p=2434"},"modified":"2011-08-09T16:34:19","modified_gmt":"2011-08-09T16:34:19","slug":"a-walk-in-the-alps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.net\/?p=2434","title":{"rendered":"A walk in the Alps"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today because the weather was lousy we drove over the St. Gotthard pass and into canton Ticino, the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>Right in the very north of the canton we took the Ritom Bahn, the steepest funicular railway (over 88 degrees!) up from Piotta to Piora. Not for the faint -hearted. I&#8217;m still amazed that the little train gets up the 800m climb.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/111.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2435\" title=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/111.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/111-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s one of the joys of hiking in Switzerland. More often than not, there is a little railway or a cable car to save you the slog up from the valley.<\/p>\n<p>One of the other joys is that the paths are so well marked.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/26.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2436\" title=\"2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/26-e1312906385580.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/26-e1312906385580.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/26-e1312906385580-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I guess they have to be. One false move in fog and you could fall off a mountain. People do every year. There&#8217;s a huge network of huts in the Alps &#8211; you can stay overnight, grab a coffee or lunch or just hang out and keep dry till the rain stops!<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/113.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2448\" title=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/113.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/113.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.runquiltknitwrite.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/113-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We aren&#8217;t taking gourmet cuisine, but it will fill you up and keep you warm. This was polenta with lentils and sausage.
