No, I’ll rephrase that, my great plans for yesterday were for a quiet knitting recovery day after all our days of running around in Rome. I fully planned to make great strides with my Retro Ribbed Turtleneck (from the Green Mountain Spinnery, as you’re asking), finish the turtle neck and be well on the way with the sleeves and along the way relax and lie on the sofa as much as humanly possible. Did it happen the way I had planned?….no it did not.

At this point I would like to put on record that I am never going to pack for a vacation with the thought in my mind that I don’t have time to do the week’s laundry and that it will be a snip to get it done when I come back. I am also NEVER EVER going to tell my children when we come back from vacation that I am doing laundry and that I want every scrap of clothing that needs washing transported from their room to the laundry room. (Never mind that it was a minor miracle that they listened and obeyed). I can only say that I will probably be doing laundry into the middle of next week. And don’t even mention the ironing… Also at some point one load of wash emerged with grids of pink spots printed on a significant number of items of clothing – almost all of which were mine, and moreover things that I actually like. Despite going through the said load I was unable to identify anything at all that could have caused the pink spots. Luckily they miraculously disappeared after I washed the load again. I am none the wiser.

Anyway, enough of laundry crises….I did manage to sit down periodically to work on the sweater. Unfortunately I have reached a critical point. I keep looking at the turtle neck and wondering how on earth I will get my head through the hole. I can’t really stretch it to size as it is on a 16 inch round needle and I’ve measured my head and my head measures 22 inches. Does everyone panic like this when knitting turtle necks? I mean I know there will be some give in the wool – but 6 inches of give seems like a lot to ask. It’s quite a long turtle neck and I’m just not going to know until I’m done and have cast of (super-loosely I might add). I have just a tiny feeling of doom…which makes me feel like stuffing the whole thing into a drawer and forgetting I ever started it.

On the positive side I at least seem to have plenty of yarn, so I’m not worrying about running out and I still like the pattern and the colour.

All in all though, it really wasn’t a very productive day. As you can see the neck is not done (by a long way) and the sleeves are not started. I had also forgotten that we would be getting back late on Saturday , shops are closed here on Sundays and I should have had a fridge full of things to eat on Sunday rather than an efficiently cleared fridge. The painter had been while we are away and had worried about my AGA and so had switched it off thereby removing the majority of cooking possibilities for at least 24 hours until it heats up again. My children were tired and hungry. Yet again I failed the Swiss good housewife test…..

Helen

I had great plans for yesterday.
