When you work from home as I do it is way too easy for every day to be filled with work and housework (I mean it’s never all done is it?) The only thing that differentiates weekends from the rest of the week is the presence of my husband and maybe slightly less driving children to activities. We always seem to be busy, busy, busy.

So without making a big hullabaloo about it I just tried to stop. I stopped scheduling things for Sundays. I left space for us to just go with the flow and how we feel. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not wonderwoman. It doesn’t always work out just how I would like it to. But just sometimes it does. And on those days I really see that it’s the right thing to do.

Today seems so far to be one such day. The rain has finally stopped (after more than a week straight), and it’s Mothers Day. Peter and I were – as always now that the kids have hit the teenage years – awake first this morning. I’d hoped for a run in the woods with my running buddies, but everyone was busy – so Peter and I hit the trails together – him on his bike and me running. He doesn’t chat a whole lot and I saw clearly how the chatting with friends distracts me normally and makes the hills easier, but it was glorious out in the woods in the early morning.

We came home to a brunch made by the children – which was great (I’ll have to get them to do that more often!) and now there is NOTHING PLANNED! For the whole afternoon….and evening….and I don’t even have to cook dinner….

What more could a girl want?

So it’s a gentle potter round the garden, some knitting and maybe even some sewing if I’m feeling creative. I might even assemble my hammock….

I can seriously recommend the lazy Sunday model. Until you’ve tried it you have no idea how good it is. It’s right up there with the being nice to yourself New Year’s Resolution. So, no promises on creative productivity this afternoon. I’m recharging my batteries.

Helen

PS I forgot to mention the tulips – aren’t they fabulous? They’re in my balcony box and I’m enjoying them so much!

A while ago I decided to really try to make Sundays a day of rest.
