When I do get down to doing some piecing I always realize that it makes me really, really happy. Maybe that’s why it sometimes takes me so long to get round to it – I always feel I should do all the other things that I have to do first before I can be totally self-indulgent!

Today I’ve been sitting at home with a huge rainstorm going on outside (so no guilt about the state of the garden, as I can’t do anything anyway), listening to the radio and just pottering around. These are the blocks from the Whirligig pattern from Carrie Nelson’s new book, Miss Rosie’s Spice of Life Quilts which I’m playing with right now. This is certainly my most favourite quilt book of the moment! There will be pieced sashing between the blocks, so you can’t quite see how it will turn out, but so far I’m loving it! As far as I can remember I have never made a quilt with a pale background before and I really thought I wouldn’t have enough fabric to be able to, but once I started digging around I found all sorts of little pieces that are being pressed in to service. Carrie used yellows as well as whites, so I am too. I’ve even thrown in some very pale green for good measure. Once the sashing and pieced border is done, the quilt will look a whole lot darker.

I love scrap quilts, I love flying geese and more than anything, I love making quilts just from my stash. I know it means I won’t end up with a beautifully colour-co-ordinated delightful masterpiece, but I don’t care. I’m a scrap girl at heart and I love working with what I already have – even more so when I can use odds and ends from my (very full) large wicker basket of small scraps!

Happy quilting

Helen

I’m having just the most delightful time.
