I’m trying to be systematic. Normally I would jump right in, cut a bit, sew a bit and bumble my way through. I did sew two of the centre stars in the beginning – I just couldn’t resist. But Carrie Nelson tells me I need to cut out squares, so squares I am cutting… Actually I had to take a break. I was starting to be a bit cross-eyed and make mistakes. There are lots of different sizes and it’s incredibly easy to misread the ruler. The error rate was starting to rise, so I thought it must be time to take a break.

I’ve made red quilts before, but never really use brown or beige much at all. I like the combination though. The Moda Lumiere de Noel reds are gorgeous. Rich and strong. They will work well with the beiges and browns. I think I’m going to love this quilt. Once I don’t have to cut out any more squares. That isn’t really my favourite part of making the quilt. I don’t know if cutting squares is better or worse than basting. I’m not wild about basting either. It is fairly soothing though – radio on, cup of tea to hand, systematically working my way through a mountain of fat quarters. I can’t complain really.

What I really love is piecing. My thought behind doing all the cutting obediently and diligently now, is that afterwards…well, party time. Undisturbed self indulgence. I can’t wait!

What a lovely afternoon!,

I hope you are enjoying yours too!,

Helen

I’ve been working on the Opening Day quilt – well, to be precise, I’ve been cutting out squares, squares and more squares.
