I have no excuse other than the fact that I have well-known butterfly tendencies and I just needed to see some results! It’s quite hard to cut and cut and cut and not really know quite what all those different sized squares are going to be used for. So I had a minor rebellion and made some stars. (Which I really enjoyed, so I’m not really apologizing for being very unsystematic!). Tomorrow I might make some more flying geese. They are my two favourites – stars and flying geese – heaven!!

I’m actually very happy with the result. I’m glad that I threw in the dark brown and I think I’ll probably use some more brown non Lumiere de Noel fabrics. What you can see above probably isn’t very representative of how the quilt will look – I’ve used the strongest reds and browns. there are a lot more middle of the road type of fabrics to mix in, where the definition between the stars and the backgrounds won’t be so stark. More like the two checked stars. I think they will be OK, but they will tone down the quilt and I’ll have to be careful where I place the strong stars. I’m going to try really, really hard not to start sewing the blocks together until I’ve got all the stars done and I can lay them all on the floor and play with the placement. That will be a challenge for me – the not sewing, not the playing with the blocks part. I’m going to try to be strong…..:)

For those new to the blog this is Carrie Nelson‘s Opening Day, made primarily with Moda Lumiere de Noel fabrics.

Today is my daughter’s 14th birthday. I can’t believe she has got so grown up. We went shopping for gifts this afternoon – and do you know what? We didn’t fight and we had a good time. (The presence of her best friend may have helped in this area!). So now I’m off to make a real culinary delicacy for dinner – home-made pizza. How about that for getting off lightly? She could have asked for coq au vin, zurigeschnätzeltes, roast beef and Yorkshire puddings – ooh any number of time consuming, slaving over the stove type of dishes – I think she’s making life easy for me. There’s a first time for everything!

I hope this is the start of a good year for her!

Helen

As you can see, my self-discipline in the square cutting area faltered a little today.
