The dog days of summer….
Summer is drawing to a close. School is back and the mornings are darker. The first leaves are falling from the Rowan tree in front of our house. Each hot day is treated as a surprise and appreciated like gold dust….maybe it is the last one …
This year we are all feeling a little cheated. Three brilliant hot weeks in late June and early July and then rain. We’ve already had days that feel like autumn. Running through foggy woods in the early mornings we talk about the summer that never was and plan for running in the snow before too long. Winters in Switzerland are so very long, and summers are gone in the blink of an eye.
We always start to heat our home way later than anyone else (aided of course by my trusty Aga!). I love letting the house cool down in the autumn so that by evening we need a log fire and everyone congregates around it to read and chat. I love using up the jams I’ve made, the fruit and vegetables from the garden that I’ve frozen. I love feeling cozy under quilts and duvets. And wearing soft hand-knitted socks again. I love staying home when the weather is cold and wet and wild outside.
Just not quite yet…

It’s a bit sad, isn’t it? I’m seeing the end of summer here too, and for some reason, this year, I’m not looking forward to fall and winter. But, regardless of how I feel about it, the season’s will change. 🙂
Enjoy your evenings by the fire, they sound wonderful!

I don’t know why, but Autumn is my favorite season. The colours are so intensive with the sun being lower in the sky, the shadows longer and nature getting ready for a long sleep in preparation for a new awakening. It’s something I really, really miss here in the tropics. So do enjoy your evening sitting near the aga!

Hi Helen, I for one will be glad to see the end of this summer – its been hotter and wetter than I like and the forecast for the next few days is for temperatures going up to 30 degrees C. We’ll be coming your way in a few weeks so keep your fingers crossed for a lovely fall.
Which lake is that in your picture – I don’t recognize it?

Though I don’t have the fireplace to sit by, or the summer vegetables and jams to bring out, I look forward to that turning inward that winter brings, and the warm socks on my feet and the fluffy comforter to sleep under.

I’m looking forward to the cooler weather…..makes for better fishing. I sure hope its a long autumn! As for your Aga, I was reading a novel this week that mentioned the Aga and I would never have known what that meant if it wasn’t for your post on yours.
