The purple cashmere scarf ….first finish of the year

Saturday, January 8th, 2011

I know you all thought that I’d been lying around all week eating Cadbury’s Dairy Milk and drinking gin and tonics while waiting for my back to heal.

(I was actually tickled pink that my son wrote in all his Christmas thank you letters that ‘mum couldn’t ski because she has broken her bottom’. One of those classic quotes that I need to write down and keep and chuckle over in years to come!)

Well here is the proof that I was doing something! (I could also show you the text of a long legal translation that I worked on too, but I’m guessing you wouldn’t be terribly interested!)

I love this scarf to bits. It is wonderfully soft and just the perfect shade of sludgy soft purple. Quite possibly my very favourite colour and I suspect it may well become my very favourite scarf!

It’s made from one skein of Jade Sapphire Mongolian Cashmere 2-ply, in  Smokey Mountain (smooshy purple if you ask me!). Because it’s hand-dyed there is  a little  color variation, but it’s very, very subtle. I have to look hard to really see it.

The pattern is based on a floral lace pattern used for lacy socks by Evelyn A. Clarke (in Lace Style by Pam Allen & Ann Budd) which I have adapted for a scarf. As you can see, it’s a not terribly lacy, lace pattern – what I didn’t want to end up with was a scarf that was very beautiful but not warm. This one has a lot of K1 P1 rib and not a whole lot of holes, so I think it’s going to be very snug!

Cast on 56 on 4mm needles.

Knit 6 rows

Then the pattern is as follows:

Rounds 1-4: K4, *P1, K1; rep.from * to last 4 stitches, K4

Round 5: K4, *P1, yo, ssk, K1, K2tog, yo; rep. from * to last 4 stitches, K4

Round 6: K4, *P1, K5; rep from* to last 4 stitches, K4

Round 7: K4, *P1, K1, yo, sl 1, K2tog, psso, yo, k1; rep from * to last 4 stitches, K4

Round 8: K4, *P1, K1; rep from * to last 4 stitches, K4

One of the wonderful things about scarf knitting is that there are no difficult to use up left-overs like there are with sock knitting. I can’t believe how much knitting there was in my one skein. About three days ago my ball was already tiny and I sensed that the end was probably nigh and the scarf perhaps a tad on the short side. Then the most extraordinary thing happened – that little ball went on and on and on. Each day I I said to my self ‘today’s the day I’ll finish it’, and I knitted and knitted and it just kept going and going. End result: perfect length and no leftovers!

Now it’s back to the UFOs for me!

Have a great weekend!

Helen

Hi Helen, Congratulations on the first finish of 2011 – the scarf turned out very well – what a lovely colour. Hope your “broken bottom” is all better.
