Using up the leftovers

Monday, January 24th, 2011

I finished my first sock – and I love it! It is soft, fuzzy and delightful and the wool has just a little 1970’s hippy chic about it.

What I didn’t love though, was the quite sizeable ball of wool left over from the first skein.

I don’t like yarn leftovers. Well, I’ll rephrase that. I like a little teeny ball leftover, just incase I ever have to darn my socks, but not more than that. It always seems such a waste. Particularly when the yarn was expensive and is divine!

So yesterday I embarked on my first ever pair of fingerless gloves using the leftovers from the first skein – hoping that I would have enough yarn, but not too much. I decided I’d better use bigger needles, as there was no way I would have enough wool otherwise. In retrospect I think I might have found smaller needles and more stitches a little easier. But who can say? I didn’t have enough wool anyway, so the decision was pretty much made for me!

What I did find out is that fingerless gloves are a bit of a faff to knit. All that tying yourself in knots trying to knit an inch of finger on multiple needles …. But it worked and here they are…

And I have just the right amount of wool left over.

Which all in all is very satisfying! Now I just have to make the other halves of the pairs…

Ahh Helen great post! love the sock what beautiful yarn. I know what you mean about having too much yarn left over so I love what you did with it. Fingerless gloves, perfect! xo

What size needles and what yarn weight do you use most often when you knit socks? I’ve finished one pair following a beginner pattern. They turned out fine. I’ve now been trying different patterns/designs and haven’t found one that I’m really happy with, but I’m learning different stitches.
