Powder Blue Pinwheels

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Normal life as we know it has ground to a halt here. Now I’ve got all the children at home sick, but  most of the time they’re just fast asleep in bed, fighting this horrible fluey bug. There isn’t a whole lot of nursing to be done if I’m honest! I’m feeling a little bit better, but still not great.  I’m just quietly sitting and sewing – can’t manage much more than that if I’m honest!

I’ve finished the pinwheel quilt top – and used pretty much every last inch of my Nature’s Notebook jelly roll, plus some yellow odds and ends from my stash and about half a yard of powder blue Jinny Beyer fabric which has been in the stash for a zillion years. The pinwheel pattern is taken from Kim Brackett’s great book Scrap Basket Surprises, but my version is smaller than Kim’s (because I ran out of fabric!) – 12 blocks instead of 20.

Can you imagine that I managed to make photos outside on a snow-free patio with the sun shining. (It’s all a little wrinkled because the wind kept blowing it away!)

I’ve even made the binding using left over 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 inch pieces of fabric … (forgive the very grotty ironing board background, which has just made me realize that I need to by a new one PDQ!)

Overall, I love the fabric, but it was the wrong choice of pattern – but it’s done and it’s already been claimed! Next time I’ll be more careful about what I do with fabric collections which have a lot of mid-values.

Now I just need to quilt it – and as it’s pretty small (48 x 60 inches), I think I’ll be able to manage it myself without too much trouble.

Watch this space!

I think you are too hard on yourself about your fabric choices. This is a lovely little quilt! Now, pat yourself on the back & start quilting!

Beautiful little quilt! The colors are so soothing. And you are right, it should be a piece of cake to quilt!

I agree it is a lovely little quilt and the fact that it has already been claimed proves it. Enjoy the quilting – I have started to quilt Purple Passion but am not sure whether the approach I am using is the right one – I’ll see once I have done a few more blocks, otherwise I’ll have to dig out the ripper and start over. Enjoy your weekend – hope the kids are back on their feet soon, although…….
