A little gentle stashbusting

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Today I’ve been pondering, writing a little and generally trying to be open to new thoughts and ideas. Nothing mind-blowing to report as yet, but so far I’m enjoying it. It feels new and different. I’m also trying to lose a little weight. Not so enjoyable and also not much to report yet. It’s early days on both counts I guess…..

But I can’t think all day, so I’ve been plodding on with piecing a zillion four patches for my Cathedral Stars stashbuster quilt.

It’s progressing way faster than I ever imagined. What would we do nowadays without rotary cutters and quick piecing techniques? As always with a stashbuster, it’s not the most beautiful quilt ever, but it’s immensely satisfying to make.

I get a huge kick out of being able to use some really ugly and very old pieces of fabric. You know the ones I mean – the whatever possessed me ones. I’m amazed by how different these fabrics are from what I would buy today. Heck I don’t think they even produce fabrics like these anymore. At some point in the future some expert will attempt to date this quilt by the fabrics – and I’m sorry to say that she’ll be a good twenty or so years out!

I also had a lovely mail delivery from sew fabulous. Now here are some really beautiful fabrics:

These are from the Penelope range. I haven’t bought blacks or pinks for ages – and I’ve never ever bought fancy cake fabric, but I love these and already have a recipient in mind. I would actually have preferred cup cakes, so if any fabric designers are reading this, then please consider this in your next collection.

These is Central Park. It’s kind of more 60s psychedelic in your face than I was expecting. And there are dinosaurs!!! I really must look more closely at the photos in future. I haven’t the faintest idea what I’m going to do with these – but whatever I do end up doing, it certainly won’t be boring!!

And finally Meadowsweet and Nicey Jane – both bright and fresh and spring-like. Nicey Jane has quite large prints – which could prove to be an interesting challenge to get me out of my comfort zone.

I do feel slightly wracked with guilt though. I clearly have no strength of character whatsoever. Do you remember my ‘I’m never going to buy more fabric ever in my whole life’ resolution? Pathetic. Must make a note to stop surfing the internet late at night when I’m tired and my willpower has already gone to bed.

Oh good grief, now I have opened the link to the shop. It is all your fault. No, Linds, you are not buying a thing………

I love the new fabric. I think it is being able to buy whole ranges in small pieces which makes it so great, don’t you? You are going to have fun!

I’m loving central park. So Helen I’ve decided that I want to do some patchwork, and I want it to be a play quilt for Beatrix – any suggestions for patchwork quilt patterns that would be good for a beginner (and doable on a machine)?

I think I shall have to get a rotary cutter – they seem to be very useful. Plus the kids are always pinching my best dressmaking scissors to cut thick cardboard and other tough stuff so they’re not very sharp any more! I can’t resist nice material either. I get a lot of mine from ebay. I have rather a large backlog at the moment too.
