Scrummy socks and June bugs

Monday, March 14th, 2011

I finished up my latest sock project last night. I had one of those funny experiences where I seemed to whistle through the first sock in no time at all and then I knitted and knitted the second sock without ever seeming to get anywhere. Anyway, they are done and I love them!

Lichen Ribbed Sock from Knitting Vintage Socks by Nancy Bush – a neat classic design with interesting toes! The ribbing helps to ensure that this won’t be one of those hand-knitted socks that wrinkle round your ankles in a Nora Batty manner.

The yarn is Koigu Painter’s Palette 100% merino in dye code and lot P444 236.It feels gorgeous and the colour scheme is delightful  – but then I’m a turquoise girl! It’s a fairly firm yarn without a lot of give.

This morning I also finally  received the parcel containing the fusible web I need for June Bug, so I’ve been experimenting! I think I probably have used fusible web before – but about a zillion years ago – so I’m a little out of practice. I’d also forgotten how much fun machine applique is. I’ve been tootling along and have finally plumped for a close zigzag using machine embroidery thread to fix down the petals. It tends to ripple a little, but ironing the heck out of it afterwards seems to solve the problem. It feels really good to be learning something new. This quilt is going to be way different from anything I’ve made before – and I’m tickled pink!

Here’s hoping you’re having a creative Monday too!

Helen

I bought the book “Knitting Vintage Socks” after reading about it in one of your recent posts. It’s a very good book. I’m knitting a pair from the book for my husband. One sock is done and fits him perfectly and am about halfway thru the second sock.

As for applique, not my thing.

Have you heard about “modern” quilts? Here their website. http://themodernquiltguild.com/. A chapter has started in my town (Las Vegas). The more modern quilts I see, the more I like them. Check it out.

Hi Helen, the socks turned great as I knew they would. I was going to ask you whether they had men’s socks in the book (before I order it) but I guess Pam E has answered my question. I started on my second sock on the week end and am almost at the heel so it seems to be going much quicker than the first – as they say practice makes (almost) perfect. I’ve been good this morning, done some housework and finished editing hubby’s book (its just about ready to go to the publisher) so now I can do some quilting!!!!

Lovely socks! I look forward to the day when I’ve graduated to knitting socks, Helen. For now I’m enjoying being a beginning knitter and am working on a scarf in a one-of-a-kind colorway of Sharon’s called North Shore. The soup looks delicious too and I think I’ll try it – my husband is a mushroom nut! Have a wonderful, creative week.

    Gorgeous socks!
I need to get back to doing machine applique too. Love the addition of applique to a quilt.

Those socks are super. Such lovely colours in them. Well done! June bug looks beautiful too. I must get crafting again and put some photos on my blog. Still nursing a poorly llama at the moment – fingers crossed for her. x

    Hi Helen,
Your June bug quilt will be lovely! I love curves in quilts. I had the same ripply problem when I began appliqueing and my LQS introduced me to tear-away stabilizer. It made a huge difference in the appearance of my blocks and in the ease of sewing around the shapes, too. Happy sewing!
