Friday Night Sew-in

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

Last night was my first Friday Night Sew-in. If this is something you haven’t heard of before, then take a look over at Heidi’s blog. I had great plans to press on with June Bug or Cathedral Stars, but in the end I was seduced away by Comic Relief on the BBC. That meant that the only possibility was hand-quilting, so I spent a pleasant evening plodding along on my Winter White Schnibble.

I used to quilt everything by hand and when I look back, most of my projects took years, if not months, to complete. Very, very soothing, but very, very slow. I had actually forgotten how slow. Or maybe I’m just out of practice. It certainly doesn’t help that my eyesight is nowhere near what it was a few years ago. There was some pretty wobbly stitching by the end of the evening.

I’ve been trying to do at least half an hour of quilting on this project every day – usually while I’m listening to the news on Radio 4. It is progressing, but it’s also taking ages. I’m not sure I’m going to embark on many more hand-quilted projects. Since I started blogging and learned to machine quilt and my production rate has increased I think I’ve just got very used to seeing results. Like straight away.

Which considering the amount of stash I need to work my way through, probably isn’t a bad thing.

I also sat in front of the tv yesterday to watch Comic Relief. šŸ™‚ I didn’t do any hand quilting though, I pieced stars for a star quilt. The colours in your pictures are lovely.

I just admire hand quilters, and your quilt looks wonderful, love the soft colors. I also try dedicating a least 30 minutes a day to my sewing; it’s amazing how much can be accomplished this way. Good luck on your machine quilting!

No Comic Relief here unfortunately! I love hand quilting and feel when the quilt is finished that it is full of love. I haven`t tried machine quilting but probably if I tried it I would love the production rate too. I`m very envious of your stash – are there lovely fabric shops in your neck of the woods?

I know what you mean about your eyesight. I can’t watch TV and embroider or hand sew anymore because I can only do that kind of work with my glasses off. And I’m constantly having to switch between my regular glasses and my reading glasses. But still, there is something so soothing about hand work.

I love the beautiful colors in your quilt. Can’t see the quilting very well, but I too love hand quilting. Love doing it, love seeing it.

It’s surprising how much quilting can get done if you set aside 30 minutes each day! Good for you!
I like the colors in your quilt. Please post more pictures so we can see it!
