And then everything fell apart….
Hello – I’m back!! What a week – a three day migraine and then a dead computer. My trusty Dell overheated one time too many and gave up the ghost, which is why there have been no posts from me for the last few days.
As from lunchtime today I’m now all set up with a sparkly new MacBook (the children are positively green with envy – have I become a cool mom after all?) – which of course I have no idea how to use. I must say it is a very pretty machine, but it will no doubt take me a few days and probably some of the nice Apple people’s free tutorials until I’m really able to do everything I want to. I haven’t even begun to look at how to do things with photos. I’m just hoping (a lot) that it will be very similar to what I had to do before. Anyway, no photos today, but I’ll see what I can do for next time.
A computer death is a strange experience – somewhat akin to losing a handbag. It really made me realize just how much of my life revolves around this little box. As a translator and editor I can’t even work without it; more to the point I can’t even find out easily if I have work waiting to be done (everything just comes to me by email). I couldn’t read the news (as an English girl in Switzerland I rely on the BBC to keep me in touch with what is going on in the world and back home); I couldn’t order my Migros shopping delivery; I couldn’t shop online (maybe a good thing?), no Facebook, no Skype….the list goes on. I felt totally cut off from friends and interests. At least for quite a lot of the time I was flat out with the dreaded migraine – so in any case wouldn’t have been able to see straight enough to work on the computer. And I did manage to pick up the phone and actually talk to a few people.
Now things are back to normal and I’m up and running again. It’s good to be back!

Oh you’re going to love your MacBook. You’ll pick it up in no time, and once you do, you’ll be amazed how much easier and less frustrating it is than a PC. I have a MacBook and an iMac. I wouldn’t go back to PC for anything. Glad your migraine is gone. That must be horrible to have one for three days. I used to have them but never for that long. Haven’t had one in years.
