The paradox of second socks

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

Second socks should be a piece of cake.

But somehow they never are.

Why is it that they seem to take twice as long to knit as first socks?

When I go on a journey, the way home always seems quicker. You would expect second socks to follow suite. The pattern is ingrained in my brain, all the little quirks and tricky parts have been sorted out and understood, so in theory I would expect to just whizz along. I generally don’t need to pull out and reknit on the second sock and all the measurements have already been worked out, so there isn’t even any pondering time needed.

Does it seem slower because the excitement is less? Am I slower because the I’m desperate to see how this will turn out feeling that pushes me to clickety clack the needles a little quicker is missing? I really don’t know.

I seem to have been knitting this sock – which I love by the way – for days and days and it just hasn’t quite got anywhere much at all. Maybe the fairies pull it all out in the night. I don’t know why, but it’s SLOW, SLOW, SLOW and I want it to be finished!

That said, the pattern and yarn are lovely – although using 2.25 mm needles means there is an awful lot of knitting involved. I don’t think I’ve ever actually knit socks on needles this small before. There are 72 stitches, where normally I only have 60.

Maybe that’s why.

Happy knitting Sunday,

Helen

If anyone wants to know – it’s Lenora from Three Irish Girls – their March sock of the month.

Second socks! Always the one that must be torn out! Always the one on which i drop stitches! Never fails!

These socks are going to be so lovely. I would never try anything this complicated. Please don’t forget to share when completed!

You’re such a busy knitter. I feel very ashamed – I haven’t knitted a stitch for ages. I must get organised and start some small project, just to get going again. I miss knitting, but writing is taking all my spare time at the mo.
