An afternoon in Canton Appenzell
This is one of my favourite parts of Switzerland – I love the hilly landscape, the green lushness and probably most of all, the beautiful old houses. It’s almost on the Austrian border and not far from where we live now and everytime I go there I just feel there’s something quite magical about it.
It’s high up on our list of the places we might decide to retire to. It’s delightful and rural, but doesn’t have quite as long a winter as pretty places in the Alps. I can really see myself in one of the old, old farmhouses, with roses growing up the side and a view to die for! What do you think?
Tomorrow I’ll show you a little of the beautiful old town of Appenzell. I don’t want to overload you!
Regards,
Helen

It is pretty, isn’t it?! Feels like miles from anywhere, though it isn’t really!
But after 18 years my mom had had enough of the long winters and prefers a lower altitude and now, a few years on, my dad and his wife are also planning to move lakewards to escape them, as well. It’s lovely in winter and summer but spring and autumn don’t really happen!

It is lovely, but could you life there year round without missing the attractions that a city like Zurich has to offer? We frequently think about moving a bit further away from the big city but—–there are always so many buts – but then again you still are still a long way from retirement and it is lovely to plan!!!

Your pictures remind me of the little naive paintings I have from the Appenzell. Really beautiful, but I don’t know if I would want to live there. A former neighbors of ours (also English with a Swiss husband) tried it, but gave up as it turned out it was a bit too much countryside ;).

What fantastic scenery. And all so green. I can see why you like it so much there.
