A slow summer morning

Monday, July 4th, 2011

There’s nothing much on the programme for today. A yoga class at lunchtime and a little light taxiing late afternoon, that’s all. The demolition work seems to have stopped – hallelujah – and I am revelling in and positively soaking up the silence. I can hear birdsong again and the gentle background sounds of village life. The sun is shining, it’s peaceful and all is right with the world.

In a couple of weeks school will have broken up and there will be hustle and bustle at home. All the more reason for me to take stock and just enjoy the quiet time on my own.

I recently read somewhere that the difference between an introvert and an extravert is that introverts need time on their own. That puts me fair and square in that camp. I actually hadn’t realized that not everybody feels like that. If I don’t get time on my own I fairly quickly go bonkers. Don’t get me wrong, I love my family and I mostly love the rough and tumble that goes with family life, but I absolutely need to just be on my own sometimes. I’m not doing anything very momentous during that time. Just pottering, sewing, knitting, listening to Radio 4 or doing stuff in the garden. Keeping things under control at home. Recharging my batteries. Quietly.

Bliss!

Helen

Enjoy the peace and quiet while you can Helen! Makes me think of the many meanings of the German word “seelisch” – a bit of peace can benefit you mentally, spiritually, emotionally, psychologically etc.

Ruh’ Dich aus – and don’t feel guilty about it!

Yes, I like time on my own too, but I’ve always considered myself an extrovert. I’ve never been one to go around in crowds of friends, but I love the company of my family or one or two special friends. I need alone time to plan my writing and try and organise things, even if it’s just a walk to the bins with the rubbish. However, there’s always someone who wants to come with me during the hols. But that’s OK. Benj is off to Uni in October, Caiti will fly the nest next year too, and my baby is 10. So it won’t be that long really before I’ll have lots of time on my own, probablly way too much!
