Listening to my body
My hip hurts.
It’s a strange kind of hurt – not the joint, more pain up the outside of the hip. It makes me walk funny. Running is, between you and me, out of the question right now.
Which isn’t good when I’m supposed to be running a marathon in less than two months.
I’m trying not to panic. I’m also trying to listen to what my body is telling me. Right now it’s saying ‘hey, you, you’re an old lady. Don’t push it. Give it time. Let it heal‘.
Which isn’t really what I want to hear.
On the other hand, I don’t really have an option. So I’m doing just that. Resting and healing and not training – other than in my dreams. The pain came quickly and wasn’t the result of an accident. I don’t know what I did – maybe too much ‘hip stuff’ in pilates? I didn’t do a long run this week because it wasn’t feeling right, so I doubt if it’s actually caused by running.
We’ll see. I’ll wait and I’ll try not to get frustrated and I’ll see. You can’t force these things. Experience tells me that that only makes it worse and problems become chronic. Been there. Done that. Don’t want to go there again.
Happily I have a two week buffer in my training plan. I calculated the weeks wrong at the start and started two weeks early, as a result of which I know I have a little time on my side. In two weeks I won’t lose all the work I’ve done over the last few months and my body may in fact respond well to a little break to rejuvenate. That’s what I’m telling myself and right now I’m OK with that.
Today I’m off to Luzern (Lucerne for you anglophiles out there) to meet Lindsay from Rocking Chair Reflections for lunch and a chat. I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow!
Have a nice day! I shall!
Helen

Poor you! Hope you’ll be as good as new very soon. Have fun in Luzern; one of my favorite places in Switzerland. Hope the weather will be playing along.

See your doctor about bursitis.I had it in the hip. It is the same thing as tennis elbow and I got it after the repetitive action of using a tread mill. They can often inject steroids into the area and that can do wonders. Just a thought, but it could be something completely different of course! Just sounds similar to the pain I had.

Well, this has been a STUNNING day! Beautiful weather, great company and loads of coffee and lunch thrown in too. It was such a delight to meet you at last, Helen, and for those of you out there who have never met any blogging friends in real life, believe me, it is wonderful. Luzern was at its most beautiful, and we hardly noticed – too much chatter going on! I loved my day. Thank you!

How lovely that you were able to meet Linds (I do read her blog but haven’t commented there) and that the weather cooperated.
Hope the hip gets better soon so that you can continue your training.

Helen I hope you are feeling better, you are wise to let your body rest.

Oh sorry to hear about your hip – I had a terrible hip a couple of years ago with pain on the outside (I couldn`t lie on it) and it turns out that my pelvis was out of line…osteopathy combined with acupuncture sorted it out in 10 sessions and I am completely pain free. With your marathon coming up, don`t wait – get it seen to by a bone person and I would really recommend osteopathy.

Hope you feel better soon, but do err on the side of caution and definitely rest for the moment. I have the occasional dodgy knee and I’ve learnt there’s no point trying to carry on as normal when it’s playing up. Not gonna happen! Take care of yourself X
