Sockaholic?

OK, I know I’m cheating, I confess, give in, you’re right….

I hereby admit that I am wantonly flouting the finish something old before you start something new rule. I am a weak-willed woman – but I guess you know that by now. It’s not the first time…

I do have an excuse…

My mother will turn 83 at the end of the month. I have no present lined up and absolutely no ideas (what do you buy someone who always says ‘I don’t need anything’?) – other than the one thing she doesn’t have…..a pair of utterly delectable handknit by Helen socks. What more can I say? – the socks will need to be airmailed, I have no time, I may have to Interflora flowers on the day just to cover if they’re going to arrive late. So, I’m sorry, but it just has to be this way. The rule is history, for the next week at least….

So this is what I’m making: (I can show you this because my mother is just about the least technologically sophisticated person out there. The is positively 0% chance that she will come across my blog. She doesn’t even know what a blog is).

This is going to be an Uptown Boot Sock ( a what? oh well, it looks nice!) by Jennifer L. Appleby from a wonderful sock book  – Favourite Socks – 25 Timeless Designs published by Interweave. If you don’t possess this book, then rush out and buy it – it’s a gem! I’m going to knit every pair of socks in this book!! The Uptown Boot Sock is described as having ‘a fluid, allover cable pattern’ and ‘a slouch design’ (whatever that is). They’re really pretty, that’s all I can say and the cable is about as easy a cable as you could find, so they should be fairly quick. Unless I mess up the pattern of course and have to unravel. It wouldn’t be the first time. But due to the time pressure I’m going to give them my all and try to get them right first time!

The yarn I’m using is Merino by Lana Grossa – and it’s lovely, although I’m guessing may not turn out to be super-hardwearing. But as my mom will probably put these socks in her drawer to save for best along with all her other treasures, I guess that isn’t really an issue.

So, gotta run, I’ve got work to do….

Helen
