Cut off and on crutches
What a funny turn of events.
As a result of the last big storm in the Alps, we are cut off from civilization – it seems for the foreseeable future. A metre and a half of snow in the last day and it’s still falling thick and fast. Both the road and rail links are closed – the avalanche risk is too high to let anything through. So here I sit, stranded with 5 teenagers.
On top of this I had a little skiing adventure yesterday. I was stupid to have even ventured up the mountain, but the girls wanted to go and I didn’t want to look like a wuss. Big mistake. I managed to fall really awkwardly in deep snow, my ski didn’t release and I did a great impersonation of Michael Owen in the World Cup when his knee bent in a direction that knees aren’t supposed to bend. Ouch.
The girls managed to get me out and upright and we struggled over to the one operating T-bar lift (it tells you something when there’s only one lift running in a whole ski area – and that something is along the lines of ‘hey stupid, you shouldn’t be here‘) and got back to the gondola to the town. Anyway, to cut a long story short my husband took me to the military emergency room – where they seemed very happy to see anybody at all and didn’t mind treating me even though I wasn’t in army fatigues.
It’s ligaments or the meniscus and it hurts like ****. I have very smart crutches – with spikes to use on the ice. (I’m not going to be doing that in a hurry!). I’m also not sure that I’ll be able to drive…if we’re ever allowed to drive again, that is.
I’m going to cross that bridge when I get there.
Right now I’m snowed in with 5 slaves, 6 if you count my husband.
I have tea and knitting. It could be worse!

Oh no!!! This time of year isn’t really your thing, methinks… after last year and all. I hope your knee will soon be a lot better with the enforced rest and hey, all those slaves LOL š
Tea and knitting sound good, take it easy x

Oh dear Helen š I hope you are back on your feet soon. Although having lots of people at your beck & call sounds very good!
Also apologies for having not commented for ages – I now realise that I check blogs via a system of links and because Nicole at Sister’s Choice hadn’t posted for a couple of months, I hadn’t checked your blog in ages because that’s where I pick up the link! I am too technically dense to work out how to make my own blog list. But it is nice to catch up with all the projects that you have been doing.
Happy New Year and get well soon!

Helen I hope you heal quickly! and that those teens are helpful while you rest, drink tea and knit.
That’s an amazing amount of snow, I can only remember one blizzard in my adult years that closed the city down for a few days, my girls were all small, it taught me the value of having a very well stocked pantry and some fun things up my sleeve to keep the girls happy.
Take Care!!

Oh! Dear! Well, no excuse not to knit now!

What a disaster! I hope you manage to keep your electricity. That’s what usually caps off an already bad situation! Good wishes that your knee heals quickly and that you don’t have any permanent damage. And that your yarn supply holds up!

Actually, that snow looks pretty wonderful. I miss winter. We don’t really get it in Washington, although the 2 feet a couple of years ago was a wonderful surprise.
So sorry about the knee, though. That’s no way to enjoy snow – no snow angels, no snow ice cream, no shoveling, no challenging the elements on the walk to the corner store (I always feel victorious when I managed to provide milk for my family, even it only involved a couple of blocks walk).

Except for the fact that you have hurt your knee, it looks like I place I would like to be stuck in for a while. I hope all is well with your knee soon! Are you in a brace?
As I side note, I just started knitting! I might be chatting with you a lot.
Feel better. May I suggest a shot of Jaegermeister to help with the pain!

I always wanted to be snowed in, preferably at the end of the holidays to prolong it a bit (and not to have to go back to school or work). Of course it’s not much fun when you are on crutches but as you said, there’s always tea and knitting. Gute Besserung!

Oh Helen, I was so sorry to read about this year’s winter mishap – perhaps you jinxed yourself by writing the previous post saying how glad you were that you were feeling healthy. I can feel your pain as that is exactly what happened to me many years ago – I fell but the binding stayed put – in my case it was my ankle – I actually skied down to the base (a rather stupid thing to do it turned out).
Do enjoy the fire, the knitting and the slaves at your beck and call. Hopefully the enforced rest will speed up the healing process.

I agree with Diane. Except for the bad news about your injury, I think getting snowed in there sounds wonderful. It’s not unheard of to get snowed in here in northeastern Minnesota, but we’re having unseasonably warm temps and our 2 inches is melting. Get well soon Helen! For a time you’ll have to be quiltknitwrite…. š

Oh Helen, I am so sorry to hear about your knee and do hope it heals quickly. Loved your snowed in with 5 (or 6) slaves comment though. Hope they are well practiced at making hot chocolates for you.

Oh no, no, no! We know all about cruceates and menisucus in this house from Chris’s long running knee problems. However, a doctor here finally sorted it all out. Do take care of yourself and I hope the problem isn’t too serious. Big hug.

Ouch! That fall sounds very painful š Your description captured it so well! What an adventure! Thank goodness you’re a knitter and have projects with you to keep your spirits up. I’ll look forward to seeing the results of your enforced knitting spree! Take care and keep us posted x

Hope the knee is doing better and the slaves are behaving on the tea front. Keep knitting!
