A spring ritual

Friday, March 9th, 2012

Yesterday I finally found what I’d been looking for for weeks to no avail at the supermarket.

Daffodils. Plain old daffodils.

Every year from January on I look out for them. This year they are terribly late in showing up, maybe because of the very cold weather we’ve had in Europe this winter. We’ve had tulips in the shops for weeks, but no daffs. Last week there were some fancy frilly variations on daffs at a fancy, frilly price. No thank you. I want the real (and inexpensive) McCoy.

What I want are the plain and simple ordinary variety. The sort that may manage to flower in my garden in a month or six weeks time (they are currently 3 inches high – it will be a while!).

I want them closed up tight in their little green sheathes.

And I want to watch the wonder of them bursting out.

Sunshine on a stem. A picture of spring, when we most need it!

The ritual is the same every year. Something so simple that never fails to lift my spirits!

Isn’t it amazing how cheering a few flowers can be? Glad for your day-brightener, dear Helen….

Happy Spring Helen! Your daffodils brought a smile to my face.

We have some truly dejected ones near us in the park that look like they did not fare well in the battle with the heavy plant vehicles brought in to clear up the last of the fallen trees after the hurricane earlier in the year, there’s not a lot of them flowering, poor wee things!

I enjoyed your daffodils – haven’t seen any here yet but hopefully soon. Yesterday we reached +12 degrees C today it is back to -12 with the windchill factor.

You’re right – I was determined to get some for St. David’s Day and had a hard time finding any, though eventually a tiny bucket of about 5 bunches turned up behind the hundreds of tulips… They never opened up properly and didn’t last, either, sadly, but at least I got some!! I looked today and there still aren’t any to be had…??!
Instead, I cut a few branches of forsythia that have turned my living room into a forest 😉

Oh we have one in the garden!!

Right with you on this. I buy the £1 a bunch ones from Sainsburys and they do bring no end of joy. I equate them right up with new born lambs. Bliss!
