Knitting socks till the cows come home….

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Now how did that happen? Mmmm a moment of late night weakness… seduced by the beautiful muted colors, the soft deliciousness of the yarn, the thoughts of toasty warm toes and sock drawers full of luxuriant handknit socks….

OK I was weak…again…. but I just couldn’t resist. I had been perusing the  delightful knitting pattern books by the Green Mountain Spinnery –  The Green Mountain Spinnery Knitting Book and 99 Yarns and Counting and strayed in weak moment to look at their website – just to see if there was anything new, you know…

And there it was – sock yarn. And sock yarn really is something that I have the hardest time walking by and ignoring. Probably because it’s so hard to find exciting sock yarn in the yarn stores here. And a hank of sock yarn isn’t going to blow the budget is it? Or eight…or ten…?  Sock yarn is like fat quarters of really cool fabric. So small that it barely seems to be spending anything at all. But oh so moreish.

So I confess to being a weak-willed sockwoolaholic. But let me start with a justification. Just let me tell you what it is I have obtained. And then tell me you wouldn’t have been tempted too.

Firstly I have several skeins of Meadow Spinnery Sock Art – and I quote – ‘a blend of some of the rarest American-grown natural fibres, 50% super fine kid mohair and 50% fine wool. This yarn is elastic, warm and soft with a subtle lustre. This yarn is a tribute to the farmers and animals that produce such excellent fleeces’. Need I say more? How yummy does that sound?

Then I have a few more skeins of Forest Spinnery Sock Art – ‘a blend of 70% fine wool, 30% Tencel has a distinct sparkle that brings out fancy stitch patterns’ (and you know how much I love fancy stitch patterns!). ‘The wood-derived Tencel adds silkiness and durability to any knitted project. We thank the sheep and the trees for producing such lovely fiber!’ Mmmm, sounds soooo gooood…..

And this yarn really does come up to scratch – it looks every bit as good as it sounds. I can tell you, I’m going to have so much fun with this lot!!!

The sweater I finished last week was made with a Tencel /wool mix from the Spinnery – and it is faboolah – as is the pattern. I am hooked, hook, line and sinker and I admit I’m a great big fat sucker when it comes to gorgeous sock wool – and I love it!!!!

So I guess everyone knows now what they will be getting for Christmas for the next year or two…or five…

Happy Knitting!

Helen

P.S. Before you ask – Granny’s sock still isn’t done, but I’m working on it and we’re getting there!

I remember holdings skeins of wool like this whilst my grandmother wound the yarn into balls. She lived in Yorkshire until she passed away in 1962 – so I must have been very young when I helped her.
I never seem to see skeins anymore as all our yarns seem to be already in balls. I love the colours – have fun creating.
