A very tiny rant
I’m confused. And bemused.
Just when did Will.i.am become a British icon?
Can anyone tell me why he managed to gain a coveted spot carrying the olympic torch?
Or how he came to take part in the Jubilee concert on Monday? (This was particularly odd as the man himself says he can’t sing unless there’s a lot of studio magic propping him up).
But there we had it ….alongside all those eternal British heavyweight superstars, Sir Elton, Sir Paul, Sir Cliff, Sir Tom up popped Mr. fireworks and pizzazz.
Is being a judge on The Voice enough to justify this? (And even there he was clearly all about the production side and not very strong on the singing bit). Or is there something more sinister behind all this?
Is Will.i.am on a mission to take over England? The world?
If you know, do tell. Did you find it rather strange too? Am I the only person pondering this?

No … I have been thinking this too! Especially his inclusion in the Olympic Torch relay. Astounding?????
Glad you had a great time back in the UK over the weekend.

Well no actually, I haven’t been wondering. I have no idea who he is! Living abroad and no kids – this is what happens. I am totally out of touch.

Yup! Wondered just the same thing when I saw him with the torch. WTF?!!

I think if you pay enough money then anyone can carry the torch for a few meters!! I’m going to see it in a few weeks time, so will try and ask a marshall!!! x

Oh dear, if my son ends up with as much charm, talent and cute good looks as Will.i.am has in he little finger I will rest easy in my OAP Home. As for Jessie J, I have no words!

I had to google him as I had never heard of him so my answer is ‘I don’t know’

I didn’t know about the torch (?!!) but found it acutely embarrassing that Stevie Wonder called him over to join in the Happy Birthday singing and Will.I.am hadn’t a clue… *blush* At least Miranda made fun…
Cheryl Cole was awful, so was Jessie J (but I’d heard of her and disapproved to my daughter already!) but I didn’t think much of Sirs Cliff or Paul, to be honest, and Reggie’s getting on a bit now, too, so was amazed and delighted at how fantastic a show Tom and Shirley can still pull off š And I loved the grace with which Annie Lennox performed, growing (a little) older with poise.
Kylie was another embarrassment, for all her pert good looks, she’s so boring and yet couldn’t take the f*** word out of her text for a Royal occasion? Really??
And have you heard that after 27 years, Dexys Midnight Runners have put out a new album on the day of the Jubilee – does anybody even care :O

Oh yeah, the torch thing totally confused me, I thought Chris Moyles and the Radio 1 breakfast team were having a laugh at first!

Never heard of him and I probably am not missing anything by not knowing from the sounds of it.
Did not see the Jubilee celebration as we were in rural France with no tv – it was lovely not to be conditioned by what was happening (or not) in the world.
Today it is my turn to be chained to my washing machine as we only returned home last evening.
So glad to hear that you enjoyed your retreat – it sounds as though it was lots of fun.

Totally agree with you, Helen. Plus I was irritated that both the hula-hooping Grace Jones (have to admire her for that, at her age) and Stevie Wonder seemed to think they were celebrating the Queen’s birthday …

I happened to turn on the TV at just the time will.i.am and Stevie Wonder were singing… my immediate thought was what either of them had to do with the UK, and I turned it off. Sorry to hear I missed Annie Lennox. Glad to hear I missed will.i.am with the torch.

Your thoughts are in step with a commentator from today’s Telegraph (page 32) in a piece titled “Why is will.i.am all over us like a rash?” – I quote:
“…who decreed that will.i.am should ba fast tracked to National Treasure status? If he wasn’t carrying an Olympic torch, he was muscling in on Stevie Wonder’s star turn or Tweeting that he wished to be henceforth known as Brit.i.am.”
The author lays the blame squarely at the door of the BBC and asks “where will they have him popping up next – umpiring at Wimbledon?”
So no it’s not just you Helen!

Yes, similar thoughts here, especially from dh who finds Will.I.Am ridiculous and insists on calling him William. Agree with the comments on Sirs Cliff and Paul being disappointing, thought Elton had forgotten to put his teeth in, and Cheryl Cole? Oh dear! Impressed with Robbie Williams and Tom Jones, and left n open-mouthed wonderment by Grace Jones.

I may be in the minority but I like him & Jessie J & lets face it you can’t blame him for loving the UK. Not sure what he had to do to carry the torch but did you see Jedward had a go too? Apparently they used to be athletes before they became human hair do’s. LOL
I think someone just has to nominate you & so long as you are not currently a serial killer you get a go.
I would love to be as fit a Grace Jones but that song was like a durge!

Haha! I didn’t know he was inundating your culture!
