The waiting chair

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

Another lazy Sunday. Time to take stock and potter through a few long-outstanding things. The house is peaceful. One daughter is happily baking a birthday cake for the class genius with a friend (a thank you for all the help he offers them all year round). It’s hideous – iced in green and turquoise. They got a little carried away with the food colouring. I can hear their laughter from where I’m sitting. It’s nice.

The other daughter is resting after an apparently fairly sleepless sleepover. To tired to fight with her sister, she’s hanging out in her (very untidy) bedroom – but also seems to be at peace with the world and her family for once! My son is camping with the scouts. There was a huge storm in the night and it will be interesting to see what sort of a state he is in when he comes home. He’s usually no trouble, but nonetheless it’s quiet without him.

I’ve been looking at my waiting chair and trying to decide which of the masterpieces in progress I should pick up and get on with.

The choice is between:

1) Second Embossed Leaves sock – 1/3 complete

2) Neckdown Wrap Cardigan – needs sleeves and border – but I have at least got my hands on the right sized needles. Very warm work though  when the temperature is over 30 degrees outside.

3) Schnibbles Winter White top ready to be (hand) quilted. Similar downside to no.2

4) Nine Patch Wonder to baste and machine quilt – but I singularly failed to make it to the quilt shop for batting during one of my three (yes, three!) child-related trips to Zürich yesterday – so I guess that one is out of the running.

5) Ragged old quilt top to repair – I certainly can’t baste it for the same reason as above, but I could conceivably mend the holes where the stitching has unravelled.

6) Homespun blocks –  20 completed, but need many more.

I’m dithering, picking up and putting down. It’s too hot and I can’t quite make my mind up. Maybe after a little lunch all will become miraculously clear to me.

One thing is for certain, I’m not starting anything new until some of these have at least moved on a little. And we haven’t even got close to considering the UFO basket as well here. I have an order due next week (ordered in a weak moment after perusing blogs full of fabulous fabrics) from the Fat Quarter Shop. Life will get very difficult after that. I must work on my resolve and self-discipline!

Maybe in the meantime I think I will write a long-overdue letter to a dear friend in the US who is nursing her mother who has Alzheimer’s.  I guess that should be at the top of my list of priorities.

Have a great 4th of July, those of you who celebrate it. For everyone else out there – I hope you can enjoy some tranquil minutes today.

Helen

That’s why my UFOs are why up in a cup board so I can’t see them ;)….. I do have one rule though; I can only start a new project if I first finished one if the UFO. Well, rules are here to be broken, right?
