Not how I expected at all….
I know this is a rather strange photo – I was hanging almost upside down off our balcony and trying to get a photo of the nine patch blocks I have made so far from the Martinique jelly roll – I needed natural light and the table was the cleanest place (although it isn’t all that clean….there are some suspicious muddy pussy cat footprints…). Please also note – and this is important…there is NO SNOW on the patio! After a snowstorm yesterday (during which I very foolishly went running up a mountain) and about 5cm new snow, we woke up this morning to SPRING!! (halleluja she sings to herself).
Anyway…..enough burbling on and back to the topic in hand….
The Martinique jelly roll – well to be perfectly frank with you, it isn’t turning out in the slightest how I imagined it would. On the roll, the fabric looked subtle and sophisticated, but now I’m not so sure. I’ve only made a little more than half of the nine blocks I need and haven’t really hit the pink strips yet, but I’m way out of my comfort zone. These are colours that I don’t think I would ever put together and there are several pretty big patterns in there which I don’t think I would even use normally on pieces this small. The reds are good – the others definitely need to be spiced up a bit and without the red it would be bland, bland, bland… The fabric choices I’m going to need to make this afternoon at the patchwork shop will have to be clever ones to pull this baby together. I’m going to need to place the reds pretty carefully too as they are pretty dominant.
mmmm its an interesting conundrum. Do I like it?… I’m not sure… it’s different and sometimes different is good…Once I get the pinks in the mix too it could change a lot, but I think the hourglass blocks I’m planning to put between the nine patches will be the real decider. So send me some positive vibes for this afternoon down at the fabric shop!!
Has anyone out there experienced these problems too? Can you give me the perfect answer?
I’m off now to ponder and enjoy the spring weather, which should at least last for the next few days. My soul feels uplifted. I have so been waiting for this….

Hello
I’ve just un-rolled my Martinique Jelly Roll – and I’m thinking the same as you – the creams are bland, did you manage to spice it up? I can see the browns and blue do go together in your blocks – I’m planning 10″ stripe blocks, with the reds and pinks used for applique flowers and hearts on the spotty fabric. The pattern is in the Jelly Roll Inspirations book – It is my first quilt.

Hi Indianna,
to be honest I found it really difficult – but I have seen a quilt where it was teamed with a lot of cream and that helped. I’m not very excited with my quilt top – which is probably why it’s still sitting around and hasn’t been quilted yet!
Thanks for reading the blog and your comment!
