A slight lapse in self-discipline….but what the heck…
Yesterday I finished the first luminous sock. I’m very happy with it…I hope it’s recipient will be too…although my husband was a little startled (well, OK read horror-struck!) when I casually threw into conversation who the sock was intended for. Sometimes I think he not only doesn’t understand me; he gives me the slightest inkling that he thinks I am a little…strange….
So here it is:
Yarn: Handart trekking by Zitron in Brazil. The colour is Brazil….nothing to do with the country..it kind of fits though doesn’t it….the sock has a certain carnival feel about it….well, either that or it has a ‘you won’t get lost in this on a dark night’ look about it.
Pattern: of my own concoction and shortly to be posted when I have tested it again!
I’m now knitting this:
I know what you are saying. It doesn’t look all that much like a nice luminous sock number two to me either….
I do have some excuses, but I guess I could just cut to the chase and tell you that I just have no willpower (whatsoever). I bought this yarn at the same time as the luminous one – same maker, but this one is called Trinidad I think. (I can’t put my hand on the label right now – but it is certainly a Caribbean island yarn.My apologies to Zitron and Trinidad if I got that one wrong). I’ve actually been looking at the skein for ages thinking thoughts like, ‘woooah that’s ugly’ and ‘what on earth was I thinking?’. As I bought it in the flesh from a yarn shop, I couldn’t even blame a bad internet photo. But there you are, sometimes mental abberations happen. Actually I blame Meg, she egged me on…..
Here’s a photo I took at the time. It isn’t pretty is it?
When I rolled the skein into a ball a small miracle happened. I kept looking at the ball and thinking ‘hey I like that’ and that thought continued to grow. It was helped along the way that purple and green are two of my very favourite colours, but once the ball was rolled I just couldn’t resist. And do you know what? I’m loving it.
Both pairs of socks need to be finished around the same time, so it’s really OK to be working on this one. It will be winging its way to my brother over in Canada for Christmas. He is not a conservative chap, so I think he may just appreciate it.

This is why yarn stores should always, always, always, knit a swatch up when the yarn is varigated. You just have no way of knowing how it’s going to come out otherwise! They both look lovely to me. I have to get cracking on Christmas sock making too.

Don’t you love how these yarns change from skein to ball to garment?! I have been both amazed and disappointed at these transformations before now and admit to being a little surprised at the purple-y one – I wouldn’t have gone for the skein but love the sock 😉
BTW, isn’t the Brazil colourway to do with the flag (football and all that?) or am I totally stating the obvious?!!
I do wish we got more subtle colourway here in central Europe – it’s tough having to rely on the internet for any variety and like Brenda on Cast-On, I am now getting steadily more and more bored with the self-striping variety of sock yarn. It’s pretty expensive to order yarn from abroad, though, you have no smooshing to do when making your choice and I’ve now been disappointed on several occasions with the colour that finally arrived once I’d taken the plunge 🙁 (Note to self: must travel more LOL!)
