Back to the Zigs

Saturday, June 16th, 2012

Finally…FINALLY…

I’m back to my half-square triangles and the zig-zig quilt. I think I’ve got about half the top done and I really love it, but I might have gone a bit bonkers by the time all the triangles are done!  This is a perfect use of the Happy Mochi Yum Yum fabric – and somehow I knew right from the start that this was what I wanted to do with it – quite nice not to be dithering around like I sometimes am.

So now it’s onwards and upwards with the triangles (and next time I embark on something like this will someone please tell me at the start to make them a little bit bigger!!)

Have a lovely Saturday,

Zurich in summer

Friday, June 15th, 2012

Zurich is a lovely city, small and interesting and it has pretty much everything you could want except for amazing fabric shops. It’s particularly good on the chocolate and patisserie front though! As you would imagine it’s clean and efficient….and expensive!!

I’ve lived here for over 20 years now and am very happy to call Zurich home – although I live in a village 15 minutes away from the centre of town.

Stuff that needed doing….upcycling and other healthy pursuits!

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

I’m trying really hard to get back to some quilting, but had accumulated a lot of stuff that needed to be done first. I had little projects in piles all over my sewing room and decided this morning that the time had come to really finish things up and clear the decks a little. Most things didn’t require much time….just needed to be done….so may I present…

1) My Amy Butler tunic – in Amy Butler fabric. (I think I’m going to love wearing this, even though my delightful (?) son told me it made me look portly – what does he know?- pah!)

2) One of my fave summer dresses – which was about 6 inches too long. Isn’t it funny how things that we thought looked great two or three years ago just look really dowdy and a bit of a chop gives a dress or skirt a whole new life? (And it seriously only took 10 minutes, not more!!)

3) A Boden skirt which I absolutely love and have probably owned for 10 years. Again it was too long for today’s fashion and wouldn’t meet round the middle anymore. Because of the fancy stitching round the bottom I shortened it from the top (taking about 4 inches off), resewed the zip, and made a band-free waist with a little plain fabric. A success I think – even better because I couldn’t bear to give the skirt away and it really is as good as new and about a size larger!

4) Zippy bags for Danny (Mommy for Reals) who is collecting for a charity dear to her heart, TRAC – you can see what Danny is up to here. TRAC gives teenagers who are in the care system in the US a chance to go to summer camp – the zippy bags will be filled with toiletries and given to the girls to keep. Go Danny! I say – I’m glad to be of help and the bags are winging their way over to Arizona as I write. If anyone would like to offer their help I think they are now looking for pillowcases – but please check with Danny.

5) And finally, last but not least, what will I hope be a piece de resistance in due course. I bet you can’t guess what I’m making with these!!!

Things are looking a whole lot clearer around here and I feel like I have a whole new wardrobe – and most of it didn’t cost me a bean!

Summer Sewing Contest

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012

You know me, always up for something new….so today I’ve decided to enter one of my quilts in the Ellison Lane Quilts Summer Sewing Contest.

I chose Hopscotch because it’s bright and bold, I finished it recently and because it’s become quite a favourite in our house. So here we are: Hopscotch by Camille Roskelley, the fabric is mainly Terrain by Kate Spain with white and iris Kona Solids.

I hope the judges and the voting public like it! If it gets selected maybe you’d like to pop over there and vote for it. Now that would be something wouldn’t it!
