Schaffhausen……a bit of a wander…

Friday, April 19th, 2013

Last week Mel and I finally managed to squeeze in a little outing – this time to Schaffhausen, a little town on the Rhine right on the German border.

Our main goal for the day was to visit the Albert Anker exhibition…a Swiss painter famous for his wonderful portraits. Of course the ones we wanted to see were the knitting ones!

Unknown

We weren’t disappointed, but I was a little shocked to see that a lot of the paintings were on loan from my least favourite Swiss politician. So maybe there is something good about him after all….

We had some time left over after lunch for a wander around the pretty old town. There’s really something to be said to living so close to such interesting and historical places, but I’m afraid I take far too little time to take advantage of them….

….seeing as how I’m mostly slumped in an exhausted heap at the weekend!

Have a good one!

What a lovely painting. Makes me think of “Heidi”.

Oh you made me chuckle about your “least favorite politician”. I KNOW the feeling. Is there anything he hasn’t got his “sticky” fingers in?
But aren’t those Anker pictures lovely?

  3. Sherry V. Says:

The first building you show (with all the paintings on it). Do you know any of the history of it? I’m thinking it must have some kind of history because of all the murals on it.

    Thank you for posting them.

Fantastic photos. How I would love to wander, explore, and absorb all the sights and smells.

  5. Elisabeth Says:

Your ‘least favourite Swiss politician’ is also mine and I don’t think some nice pictures are going to make him any better.
Schaffhausen looks really nice, I’ve never been but it seems well worth the trip.

It does you good to get out and see the world doesn’t it. If you’re working hard, it’s completely necessary. Have a nice relaxing weekend!

  7. Susan Says:

Nice to get some moments to yourself doing something different and enjoying the spring weather too by the looks of things. Now sleep well – it is the weekend after all.

Obviously yer man has hidden depths, so well hidden that you’d never glimpsed them before 😉

Looks like a lovely place, but not sure I’d like the painting bill!

Sorry, all I can think about is Doctor Emil Schaffhausen in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels!!

there is so much to see and so much we don’t even bother to see in our own backyards. I know I am guilty of that for sure. Thanks for sharing your photos

Funny how Schaffhausen doesn’t get much press, yet it’s had a good bit of history, including being bombed because it sticks out so far into German territory and it’s actually an interesting and attractive town! Helen, I think we ought to start a history series 🙂
But it was a lovely day out, wasn’t it?!

  12. MelD Says:

PS for Sherry – the painted house is the Haus zum Ritter (the Knight’s House). There’s a Wiki entry under http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haus_zum_Ritter_(Schaffhausen) but only in German. Basically, it was built in 1492 (interesting date!) and the paintings are by Tobias Stimmer, who did them 1568-70. There are a variety of motifs, from the family arms to a range of pictures showing the personification of things like virtue, state, church, victory and scenes from the Odyssee, among other things.
Sorry for hijacking the blog, Helen!

The exterior of that building is amazing! Hope you have some more energy now:)

  14. Angela @ Heart of Charnwood Says:

What Annabella said! It is an exquisite building, but often the way that life gets in the way of us taking time to see the beauty of what’s around us!

  15. Mary Says:

Sounds like you had a good day. The painted building in the top photo is just incredible.

Charming town. I do envy you loving so near such historic places.
