Cocooning

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

I read an article yesterday about cocooning, the unexplicable urge to stay home by the fire, bake, read ….and I’m sure it would have said ‘knit socks’ if the writer had been enlightened enough to know about  that particular pleasure. I had no idea that it was known as cocooning. Did you know that? I could have sworn I was hibernating, but there you are, you learn something new every day!

In Europe and North America at least, winter seems to have hit early and dramatically this year. The Swiss are always very good at dealing with snow, so here at least everything is pretty much functioning as normal (much to the disgust of my teenagers, who would give their right arms for a snow day).

It’s fairly unusual for us to have as much snow as this so early in the winter – in the lowlands at least – and it’s  having quite an effect on everyone’s moods. Somehow it just feels more wintery, more Christmassy than normal. Or maybe I’m just noticing more, because for once I’m not rushing around like a chicken with its head cut off. No roses to smell right now, but I’m certainly taking time to smell the Christmas baking, pine branches,  fragrant candles and Glühwein. Oh and I’m enjoying sitting by the fire and reading or knitting.

And I’m not even feeling guilty about it.

Helen

(I’m hoping too that all this pre-Christmas tranquility carries on and that I won’t suddenly realize that I haven’t done half of what I should have! I think it’s all under control, honest!)

Cocooning – I love that word. It has a feel to it of warmth and softness. Much better than hibernating ;). I’m so jealous about all that snow you are having this year. Enjoy!

What a perfect word! It is exactly what I am doing right now – as are my friends. Love the photo!

Unfortunately I have to leave my snug cocoon to make a run into the village to mail a last Christmas parcel but then I’m hurrying right back to my knitting. And yes indeed winter (which is not even officially here) has started with a bang.

Oh yes, cocooning!! Definitely. Though the Glühwein at the Christmas market in Konstanz with the paths and trees all snowy, looking over the lake and watching the water birds wasn’t bad today, either… ;))
And now back to the cosiness of tea and knitting – oh and a few favourite childhood books I have just rediscovered on my shelves, incorrigible nostalgic that I am!
