Last sock of the year?

Monday, December 20th, 2010

It’s quite extraordinary. My efforts to scale down are certainly showing results. Can you imagine, less than a week to go until Christmas and I’ve been knitting socks. I can’t remember that ever happening before. Normally I’ve gone into the headless chicken routine by now.

Not this year though. Everything is done, bar a little last-minute food shopping. The only stress now concerns snow conditions and whether my 83 year old mother will be able to fly here from England. I really don’t want her getting stuck in Amsterdam and having to sleep on the floor at her age. Anyway we have a couple of days to see how things develop in that direction. And I guess a whole lot of people are in the same situation.

So…back to the socks…

Here is the first one and the second is well on the way.

It is a Retro Rib Sock by  Evelyn A. Clark from Favourite Socks 25 Timeless Designs from Interweave knitted in Pagewood Farm Glacier Bay sock yarn in Lavender Fields. Not terriby photogenic. Much prettier in person! I know I’ve said it before ad infinitum, but this is pattern is just great – understated, elegant and doesn’t bag. A ***** recommendation.

Now I think it’s time to make some Christmas biscuits and listen to some carols. Lovely!

I hope you are all managing to carve out a little oasis of calm sometime in your busy week!

Helen

I wonder how many socks you’ve knitted this past year? Glad to hear that you are well prepared for Christmas. Yes, we had the same drama; Thomas was supposed to fly home from Boston via Heathrow, but of course his flight got cancelled. Luckily he got another flight “the other way” and is arriving in a couple of hours after 26 hours in the air. I guess he’s not going to do much tomorrow ;). Our move has gone very smoothly; I think we are getting the hang of it after 11 moves in the past 25 years. Only my sewing room is still a mess, but that can wait. Sorry to hear that the snow is melting. What a shame. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Vreni xx

I am in relaxing mode too! All the gifts are wrapped and under the tree. Well, all but the one for Cousin Paul. My husband says he will take care of that one. I can’t remember being done with all my preparations this far in advance either. Today I am making my holiday grocery list and seeing what I can get made ahead of time. I do seem to spend Christmas Eve in the kitchen preparing food for the next day!

I’m in the final stretch. My mother handed the Christmas chores to me, which meant I bumped the Thanksgiving chores to my brother and sister-in-law. My husband will take care of Christmas dinner, I take care of Christmas Eve dinner. I’m finishing the binding on my sister’s wallet and still have to finish my mother’s nightgown and make room darkening curtains for my nephew. I’m not even thinking about decorating the tree until the day before Christmas Eve, once everything is done. I have to work on Christmas Eve, so that is throwing a spanner in the works.

I was doing quite well…but I’ve just noticed that I’ve literally spent all morning in my PJs watching TV…and not even knitting…so the list of stuff to do grows ever longer! I really need to wrap some stuff, and I really want to make coconut ice today…and ginger macaroons. Mmmm something really is going to have to give.
