Calling in the professionals….

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

I’m still stitching…

Martinique is making slow progress, but it is progressing and I will get it finished. It’s amazing how much willpower I can bring to bear when I need to.

However, I have absolutely made my mind up that this is a never-to-be-repeated experience. So the other quilt top waiting to be quilted is being sent to England to be sorted out professionally. On the grounds that life is too short and my sanity is too precious….

Also, it’s a quilt that I absolutely love. (Unlike Martinique, which doesn’t really light my fire!). It would really be a shame to make a mess of it….so I’m calling in the professionals and my quilt is off on an international journey.

Do you remember this?

It’s Opening Day – a Carrie Nelson pattern from Miss Rosie’s Spice of Life Quilts. The fabric is Lumiere de Noel by Moda.

I can’t wait to use this quilt – it’s one of my real favourites. I love the cream and red colour scheme and as you’ve probably gathered by now, stars and flying geese just hit all my buttons….

Does this count as another UFO almost completed? You know, I guess it does! Well, who would have thought that finishing UFOs would be such a breeze!

I know exactly what you mean. Doing your own quilting is stressful — mentally and physically. I do as much of my own quilting as I can using my Janome 6600. When I do my own, I have a collection of stencils I pick from. I also think the key is finding the right marking tool to use. Sometimes my fabrics are dark and my purple disappearing pen doesn’t show up. Then I use the chalk pounce method, but I “paint” the chalk on with a small sponge brush and try not to smudge off the marking as I’m doing my quilting. Otherwise, it’s sure a relief when the project is done! Professionally done is so much better!!!!!

Helen your Opening Day Quilt is beautiful and I can hardly wait to see what your quilter chooses do do with it. I’ll use a pantograph on Katie’s, I have a few coming any day now. I must admit that I never cared for quilting with my domestic machines, though I do now have one that makes it less painful. Its just hard to beat having a queen or bigger quilt done on a longarm. Good for you for persevering with your Martinique.

Your quilt is gorgeous! I have this pattern and have wanted to make it for quite a while…this may be just the motivation I needed to get me started!
