The garden in June

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

This has been an extraordinary spring. The warmest and driest since records in Switzerland began. Normally in early June we are just starting to get used to the idea of summer, but this year everyone has been in summer mode for a couple of months already. The garden is in full bloom and there is lots of work to do – mainly involving weeding and spraying against greenfly and blackfly, which are out in party mode this year. My broad beans are so covered in blackfly that I really doubt whether they will survive. They are always at risk, but this year because of the temperature they have been hammered, ditto roses, although the roses don’t look as bad and I haven’t lost the fight for them yet.

This year I’m going to try really hard to make time to sit in the garden and enjoy it and not just rush around trying to do a never-ending list of jobs. This is easier said than done for me. I’m not very good at just sitting and reading a book. I always like to be doing things. Must try harder though. It’s a shame not to enjoy the fruits of my labour!

Hope you are enjoying the start of summer, wherever you are!

Helen

Your garden looks great! I just love a mixed perennial border. What are the yellow flowers to the right of the path?

May and June are the best months for my garden too. I simply can’t get enough of the flowers, edible garden growing and the fruit trees budding. Your photos are lovely and your garden is so pretty.

So beautiful. We have had much warmer temperatures recently, after a spring of rain and cold- not normal.
Yes you must sit and enjoy- I’m guilty of not taking the time also.

Oh yes, I could handle sitting on a deck chair in your garden for an hour or so reading a good book. So lovely.

So much of what is in your garden is in mine too! I love the photos, and I have just sat down after attacking the greenfly here. Not to mention the blackspot which has just started on 2 of the roses. War is declared. Just sitting in the garden is one of life’s greatest pleasures, isn’t it. I love it!

It sounds like you need to put sitting in your garden on your to-do list, so you can check it off as an accomplishment. That way it won’t be lounging around, but doing something you need to get done!

Your garden is absolutely beautiful! Here, where summer temps are usually above 100 from May through September, we are having an unusually cool May/June. It still hasn’t officially hit 100 yet, though we know the days of 120+ will be here before the end of July. I pretty much have to give up on gardening during July and August, except for the plants that get some shade from our house, but I love seeing beautiful gardens on-line and in magazines!

What a gorgeous garden. I have a hanging basket now – my sisters-in-law who came to stay last week bought it for me. So chuffed!
