Making progress

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

Things seem to be calming down on the home front, at least for the moment. School breaks up tomorrow, so I’m taking full advantage of the quiet right now. We seem to have got our heads round the school situation and I think we’ve got some tutoring almost organized for my daughter next year, with a teacher she really likes. That’s about as good as it’s going to get right now, so I’m leaving it at that and we’re moving on and trying to be positive!

I’ve been basting my small Nature’s Notebook quilt top and now it’s all ready to machine quilt. Basting a small top isn’t anywhere near as horrid as doing a big one and it seemed to get done in no time. Torchwood on Radio 4 helped mind you! I’m wondering about trying to quilt it with some pretty Madeira variegated blue rayon thread that I’ve had for years. Does anybody out there have any experience of quilting with rayon thread? – I’ve never tried, but I’d be really happy if I could use the threads I have – they are a beautiful match and it would be great to finally use them up!

I’ve also started on another Otello jacket. I’m thrilled with the first one and had the same amount of the same wool, Lamb’s Pride Bulky in Elderberry Wine – aka mixed purples. I remember when I got this yarn. I’d ordered it online and couldn’t believe what I’d done when it arrived. It’s been consigned to the back of a cupboard ever since and I really thought it would never see the light of day. On a second viewing I decided it had potential, or at least some potential and wasn’t quite as ghastly as I’d thought at first. I may still be making a big mistake! The Otello pattern is so good though that I think it’s worth a go. I’m not going to use it for anything else and I think this is probably its best chance. What do you think? Would you believe I even possess a rather zippy purple velvet skirt that matches perfectly. And purple is my favourite colour….

Really though, what I wanted was to the space I’d made when I took it out of the cupboard… there’s nothing better than finally making some progress ploughing my way through the stash and this yarn took up tons of room!

So that’s me for today. Quietly ruminating and going about my business. Rather nice really!

Looking forward to seeing that quilt all quilted. The varigated blue thread sounds beautiful. I meant to tell you how gorgeous the jacket you finished turned out. It looks stunning on you!

You have such an eye for colours, Helen. All your materials and wools are so pretty. I’m going to be more choosy with what I buy. In the past I’ve tended to opt for something cheap, but not any more. I shall go for slightly more quality now.

All those purples really are very pretty, they are going to make a beautiful sweater even if the yearn wasn’t exactly what you were expecting when you ordered it.
