Hopscotch with Kate Spain’s Terrain

Monday, March 12th, 2012

I didn’t get very far with my clear up yesterday. I was seduced (there is no other word for it!) by a project that I’ve been dreaming about for ages.

This is it:

Hopscotch by Camille Roskelley made with Kate Spain’s Terrain and Kona white and coal fabrics….

I’d really been pondering this for ages and thought I’d come up with such a sophisticated winning combination.

But now I come to look at it, I don’t like it at all. Actually it reminds me of the black and white tiled entrance halls that you sometimes see in posh houses in England. The glorious sixties effervescence of Terrain is lost. Completely diluted. It just looks ordinary (which it certainly isn’t) and the blocks look masculine, flat, lacking in charm.

I’m having a re-think. Luckily I have yardage of two of the Terrain fabrics, so I’m thinking this…

What do you think?

I think it’s going to knock my socks off and I have a fair bit of unpicking ahead of me!

Oh I like it Helen – what`s not to like where Terrain is concerned? Is it worth making a couple more blocks before you completely rethink?

I like how unique the first one is! So unexpected, and I don’t think it’s masculine. Try putting the bright orange patch across from the dark blue, instead of next to it. Ha – a lot I know, a person who doesn’t quilt. :O

I like both actually – love the way that the star is formed. I wouldn’t start ripping – but you are the one who has to live with it.

I like number one, but I think the grey is putting me off a bit. I like number 2 even better though.

I like both options, but I can see how option 1 could obscure some of the bigger prints

I love the first one, but not the grey. I have to say, after using navy with the Terrain myself, I love that particular combination. Navy seems to really show off the incredible colours in the fabric line. I would have to see more triangles together the second way you tried before I could give more of an opinion.

Ooh I have a Terrain Jelly Roll and was pondering this pattern – I’ll be watching to see what you decide!

Terrain has been one of my fabric disappointments. I made a quilt with it and it was ok but it didn’t knock my socks off. I think parts of it are great. Your block at the end is one of the combo’s I like.

I’m afraid I’ll be no help in this dilemma! I love the subtleness of the orange print at the bottom, and I also like your suggestion of navy (in a subsequent post). Standing across the room though, and looking at the sets with grey in them, the bright colors really pop and the grey recedes (to me).

This is a “smoothing iron” block, so maybe look for images by that name instead of Hopscotch. Some of them alternate the dark/light for the star points, and others have them all the same color.
