Hopscotch on Hold!
Thanks for all your comments yesterday. Quite a few of you agree with me that the dark grey I was using is too strong…..and actually the more I’ve pondered, the more I actually think that maybe the white isn’t right either.
I’ve been scouring the internet to see what other people have been doing.
The nicest quilt I’ve seen made from Terrain is probably Susan’s, which you can see here. She used navy as a contrast – and I think you’ll agree, it’s brilliant!
(Mmmm…..ponder navy…..)
Hopscotch quilts are a bit few and far between. There’s currently a Flickr group on Swoon and Hopscotch (both patterns by Camille Roskelley)…..and there is approximately 1 Hopscotch to 9999 Swoon projects. You can check it out here. (I’m going to say this very quietly…but I haven’t seen any projects yet that light my fire!)
So right now things are rather on hold here. I really, really want to make this project with this fabric….and I’m sure I’m only a hop, skip and a jump away from finding the answer. I’ve been forced (kicking and screaming, as you can imagine!) to order some more fabric. More Terrain and also some more Kona Cotton Solids and when they arrive I’m going to do some auditions and try to find something to take over from the grey and white…
Watch this space!

Lovely fabric! I am thinking perhaps you could bring out the funky colors you love in this fabric… pick 2, any 2. If it were mine I would probably bring out the funky green, and use a lighter aqua for the centers, because blues and greens just speak to me. However, any 2 colors from what is there will work. Jinny Beyer says to use “shades” of a color and not try to match what is on the fabric selvedge color dots… go lighter or darker to make it pop.
Hope these suggestions help you find what is right for you. Do let us see what you come up with… I know it will be wonderful! I can just visualize this in 30s reproduction prints… I have GOT to do something with that huge pile of fabrics I have been collecting!

The Hopscotchalong only really kicked off yesterday, so hopefully by the time you get your fabric there will be a load more in the pool xxx

I do love the navy with the Terrain, maybe that’s the way to go for the darker colour. Maybe an orange where you have the white right now?

I used Kona Coal and was happy with it, but there are so many colors in Terrain it is difficult to play with them all together.

Thanks for the lovely words about my Terrain quilt. I am really looking forward to seeing different colours auditioned. I have a feeling it will give me all new Terrain ideas.

I think I agree with Kathy E. about picking one of the colours in the existing patterns for harmony. Funny how the grey and white don’t really work, you’d think they’d be neutral but it’s true, they do jar, for some reason… Still, it must be fun to play around with all the permutations 😉 In fact, I nearly (but not quite!) ordered a set of quilting squares from the V&A yesterday – eek, could be catching??!! Perhaps I should just use what I’ve got and do the projects I’ve had in mind for ages, starting as I mean to go on?! LOL

Since I’m not a quilter I won’t offer advice, but you always come up trumps in your fabric choices in my opinion, Helen.
Fancy there being a hopscotch quilt – what a lovely name!
