Remind me never to marry a Greek…..

Tuesday, August 21st, 2012

or an Italian, or a Turk or a North African. Not that I have anything at all against such chaps per se you understand…not to mention the fact that I’m very happy with my Swiss-German husband.

It’s the heat. I just can’t be doing with it. My Northern English body doesn’t do well in the heat – and Switzerland is currently having a record-breaking heat wave. It’s killing me. Most of the time I feel like a puddle on the living room floor,  sapped of all energy and glowing gently.

The schools went back yesterday. Under normal circumstances that would be the biggest signal of the year for me to spring into action, full of new resolutions and energy, raring to go. I love the start of the school year – it’s even better than New Year for turning my life around and taking part in ventures new. I was all set with sewing projects, plans to increase my (currently very low) running milage – I was going to be supermom, supersewer, superfit….you name it, I was there in my head.

And then it got hot.

And I ground to a halt.

Sport is out of the question (I would die)

Sewing is a no-no as my sewing room in the roof of the house is a million degree sauna.

Cleaning the house is iffy because I’m lathered with sweat in a nanosecond. I have however made a modicum of progress in the rather deliciously cool and very messy cellar 🙂

Don’t even think about asking me to cook anything – my Aga is warming the kitchen nicely and it’s 40 degrees in there.

Most of the time I’m just a slug on the sofa. Even reading is too much effort….laziness and inertia pervade.

But all is not lost….I did do a little knitting…something that’s been waiting to be knitted for a while. And it’s turquoise. My favourite summer colour.

Soay by the Shetland Trader (aka Gudrun Johnston) in Zara merino extra by Filatura di Crosa. It’s a lovely pattern – I made it in purple last year.

Now I’m off to do a very sedate rain dance in the hope that that might cool things down a bit here….

Roll on the autumn….

Phew!

Helen

Oh Helen, I do know exactly what you mean – we are finally out of our heat waves (hopefully although the forecast for Sunday is 28 degrees)- the nights are actually cool enough to sleep without the air conditioning. While it was still cool yesterday morning I took a one hour walk – lovely. When we have high temperatures we also have high humidity so any thoughts of washing floors are immediately squashed – they never dry and all day you feel as though your feet are sticking to the floor.
Hang in there and keep on knitting – before you know it we will be complaining about the cold.

You need to run away from home like Annabella did!

We had a very very hot Sunday and I wished it were cooler and now we have rain forecast for all next week so be careful what you wish for!

At least you can do knitting or EPP outside – enjoy the rest of your summer. The Autumn Term will be upon us before we know it!

Outside is a no-no, inside is iffy, where should we go?! Yesterday I tried the bedroom floor (usually icy because it’s over the cellar!) which wasn’t too bad. Then I switched to a very tepid bath in a darkened bathroom – fine till you get out again. Sigh.
Today I dared to vacuum and was instantly vaporised – the vacuum tube then broke just as I was finishing… so it was a good excuse to sit in the cellar for a whle longer. I feel your pain.

Quite thankful that I am disappearing off tomorrow morning to middle England’s enticing-sounding 17-18°C with rain due by Friday ;o!!! Of course the forecast here is now also for rain and gradually decreasing heat till you get the same weather – I can’t win, it seems.

(I always said I would have a Viking and although not actually Scandinavian, that is pretty much what I got LOL – maybe fate can’t tell the difference between Switzerland and Sweden either, like so many other people!!)

We arrived in Switzerland on the 7th and the weather was absolute perfection the first week and a very welcome relief from the heat and humidity here in Georgia. Yes, the second week was much warmer than anticipated. Upon returning home, it appears that our annual summer misery is over. We shared the parking shuttle with a couple returning from Scotland and they said it was unusually hot there too.q

It’s horribly sticky here, ‘they’ keep promising thunder storms, but the most we get is a very brief shower of rain in the stickiness. I did go to an exercise class tonight, forgetting the gym has no air con, I was literally sweating buckets!

I so hope you get some cooler weather soon!

It’s been tough going here too but is finally cooling a little and we’re meant to have storms tomorrow to clear the air. I’ve been sticking to the computer keys when I’ve been working but mainly I’ve been filling water buckets and watering the veg. Keeps me fit I guess!

You left off Australian! Your unusually hot summers are just our regular summers! And I live in the temperate South Australia. I’m not a fan of roaring heat either. Ideally I’d like it 26-30 and sunny without wind (always windy here by the coast) with cool nights for sleeping. BUT, we do cater for heat here. Most houses and workplaces are airconditioned. Hope you can keep cool!

I know what you mean about the heat, I’ve felt like a noodle for the last month! The yarn color is lovely.
