Tweaking the pins…

Friday, January 21st, 2011

I’ve been unpicking and substituting and restitching and trying to get my giant pinwheel to work better. The Nature’s Notebooks fabrics are gorgeous, but difficult because there are just too many with middle values. However, I’ve been replacing some of the small outer triangles with yellows (of which I have meters and meters in my stash) and I’m quite happy with the result. Not ecstatic, but happier than I was. Now I think even the pinwheel points from the softer blues don’t fade into the background so much.

I’m so determined to somehow make these fabrics work. I really, really like them and I’m sure that if I use intelligent fabric placement (hmm!) I can make a go of this pinwheel quilt. I have to. I’ve cut out a million rectangles, so you see, there’s no going back. With a bit of bidge and bodge I’ll get there….

Yet again I’ve been seduced by a jelly roll. Has this happened to you? Jelly rolls are so beautiful and so very deceiving. All those gorgeous fabrics and they all fit together so well and really don’t cost and arm and a leg. Wrapped up and waiting like a delightful birthday present.

But don’t be deceived. In most cases working with jelly rolls is a tricky enterprise. They match too well. It’s terribly difficult to introduce other fabrics without them standing out like a sore thumb and, as I’ve found to my dismay, yet again, there are too many fabrics in the middle of the spectrum. So beautiful, and yet so very difficult…

(OK, so I admit that Bliss may be a big exception to this , but Bliss as I’m sure you will agree, is somewhat special!)

So here I am, tweaking the pins, so to speak. And using lots of yellow fabric. Which is OK. It’s out of my stash and it’s a colour I like…And I’m learning a lot!

Have a nice weekend!

Helen

I agree with Nicole. I am partial to yellow esp this time of year, I find it an uplifting happy colour…..like sunshine. It really does give the eye a place to rest and brings out the best of the blues.
