Baby Steps

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

My butterfly tendencies are rather to the fore at the moment as I’m bubbling over with so many different things I’m trying to do all at once, so I’m making little bits of progress on a whole lot of different projects. As I get older my powers of concentration seem to be getting worse and I do much better when I give myself limited amounts of time on a certain thing and then switch to something else for a while. This means that I never see huge changes, but gradually those half hours and hours do add up to something worthwhile and I think it’s better than overkill, boredom and then laying something aside.

Cathedral Stars by Bonnie K. Hunter is one of those projects. I try to get at least a half hour done most days and as you can see, it’s coming along nicely!

What you can’t see at the moment – and where most of the work has been directed – are the sixteen billion four-patches I’ve also made. Putting the two blocks together is super-quick once the four-patches are done. I think this means that I’m in a much better state of completion than you would necessarily think just by looking at the eight blocks completed to date.

I’m finding this a very stress-free and rewarding quilt to make. There have been almost no major colour/fabric decisions to make, as the fabric selection was made up front and based on the something about the right sort of colour that I have enough of rule. Otherwise it’s just a case of looking for fabrics that are jewel-coloured and have been lying around unused for at least a decade!

There’s a lot of piecing, but between you and me, that’s something I find rather therapeutic and satisfying. It’s almost a miracle that I can take all sorts of frankly, not very beautiful fabrics and hey presto make something that is starting to look really quite eye-catching.

All in all I’m having a blast very quietly in my little sewing cubbyhole. I’m not sure anyone else has even realized what a lovely time I’m having.

But that’s OK. I’m enjoying it while it lasts!

Good evening Helen, it just so happens that I was looking at Bonnie’s blog this morning and admiring the Cathedral Stars and thinking that I might give them a go when I am finished with my current quilting projects.
Since you wouldn’t come to clear out my freezers I had to do it myself (and the fridge while I was at it) and baked a cake – does that make me a domestic goddess for the day?
Hope the coming week is a good one for you.
