Hibernation
Even though the sun is shining outside and it’s a glorious autumn day I can feel my body starting to feel sluggish. I have sewing class tonight, which I always enjoy, but my inner psyche is saying ‘no, no, stay close to home, shut the blinds, light a fire, snuggle down, sleeeeeep……….’
Every year it’s the same. When the nights start to close in and it begins to get dark earlier I go into hibernation mode. It takes superhuman acts of will to get me out of the house in the evening. Sometimes it’s even pretty hard during the day, and that’s before we’ve even hit any horrible winter weather. Really I just want to batten down the hatches and stay home.
I want to cook comfort food – lots of pies and casseroles and fruit crumbles with the fruit I froze over the summer. I want to wear lovely hand-knitted socks and take lavender baths and spend inordinate amounts of time in my flannel pyjamas. I may even try to get my hands on some horlicks. I will knit a little, sew a little and work my way sedately through the piles of books stored up waiting to be read. I will eat porridge in the morning and soup with crusty bread for my lunch. I will live out of the freezer so that I hardly have to grocery shop at all. I will relish my isolation (at least until the children come home).
But now I have to pull myself together and get ready to go out, even though I would rather stay in….but I know it’s good for me and how else will I ever work through the stash of dressmaking fabrics in my fabric cupboard. And believe me, I need the space those fabrics take up for my patchwork fabrics…
Enjoy your evening you lucky people who get to stay in…..

((((Helen)))) I KNOW exactly what you are talking about. Love of home and being cozy and staying in jammies all day when it starts getting chilly outside, nothing wrong with that!!! Sorry you have to go out when you really don’t want to but that just makes it all the more wonderful when you get back to home sweet home and you can make yourself a cup of tea and lie under a nice homemade quilt. Take care, my friend.

Doesn’t hibernating sound like the best! Unfortunately job and real life beckon.
Love the picture on your blog today and love the thought of hanging around in jammys – even if it’s just a dream. Enjoy!
